Different flags have been incredibly important symbols for the LGBTQIA+ community for years. They are visible celebrations and representations of LGBTQIA+ identity that can be used for pride, celebration or protest.
There have been many flags that have been used by members of the non-binary community to represent their proud identities. These have had different designs and colour combinations that celebrate the beautiful diversity and rich history of non-binary people. For a while, the Genderqueer Flag was most commonly used at Pride marches. This flag was created by Marilyn Roxie in 2011. It has three horizontal stripes: the top stripe is lavender which represents androgyny or queerness; the middle stripe is white for agender identity, and the bottom stripe is green for those outside the binary genders.
The widely recognised and much-loved Non-Binary Pride Flag that is most often seen today was created by Kye Rowan in 2014 in response to non-binary people feeling improperly represented by the genderqueer flag. It consists of four horizontal stripes with yellow signifying gender outside of a binary, white representing a mix of all genders (as white is a mixture of all colours), purple representing a mix of both binary female and male (pink and blue mixed) and black for people who are agender (black being the opposite of white).
The Non-Binary Flag can be seen being flown and worn proudly at all LGBTQIA+ events, marches and festivals, particularly on 14th July which is International Non-Binary People's Day. On that day, people of all shapes, sizes, colours and (of course) pronouns come together to proudly celebrate their diversity and their unique beauty. There are still many places in the world where non-binary people are not recognised or are discriminated against so it is more important than ever to fly the flag for all to see!
