Progress Pride Flags

The LGBTQIA+ Community has so many fabulous flags which represent the many diverse and fabulous people that make up the community. Some of these flags have been around for decades, others are relatively new and others are evolving all the time to ensure that they are inclusive and fully representative symbols.

2021 was a big year for the LGBTQIA+ Community and there was much debate about whether the famous Pride Flag is still the right symbol. Some version of the six colour rainbow flag had been the main symbol for the community for more than forty years but now some parts of the community felt it needed an update. With Black Lives Matter being the subject of major international news and the rainbow now being used as a symbol for the NHS in the UK, some members of the community decided a new flag was needed.

The Progress Pride Flag was designed in 2018 by Daniel Quasar. It is based on Gilbert Baker’s famous six colour pride flag with each of those six stripes having a different meaning: Red for life; Orange for healing; Yellow for sunlight; Green for nature; Blue for harmony; Violet for spirit. However, further stripes have been added in a triangle shape on the left-hand side. There are brown and black stripes to represent people of colour and also stripes in the colours of the Trans Flag to represent their wonderful community.

After its adoption by large parts of the LGBTQIA+ Community in 2021, the Progress Pride Flag has been flown all around the world, from the Boston Pride Parade to the Office of the Mayor of London. It is all a part of the community’s goal to be as inclusive as possible and to have a symbol that represents and celebrates all of its members.
